Have nice Pre-Christmas time!

Although the pandemic is again rearing its ugly head, I would like to wish everyone a happy pre-Christmas time! Last Friday, we were able to have our small pre-Christmas celebration of the School of Pharmacy at Puijo. At least I stopped for a while to look back again, and despite all the rush and everything, it has been a good year for us! Let's just finalize the last tasks for this year and then have a nice and well-earned break before starting the fresh new year.

Photos taken by Miia. And Yes, we have a real winter already! Lovely! 😀

We are hiring!

If you have a talent and think you could fit to our group, we are currently looking for a young motivated researcher either to do proteomics or molecular modelling in our research projects. There will be a possibility to start a Ph.D. studies. The funded position will be for 2 years, and possible continuation to finalize the Ph.D. project will be applied as the project proceeds.

More specifically, the selected applicant will be working in a project that aims to use surrogate transporters to deliver endogenous compounds, like creatine into the brain and neurons, when their primary transport mechanism is unfunctional, such as in the case of creatine transporter deficiency syndrome that causes developmental disorders, learning disability, behavior changes, epilepsy, and autism. Since there is a lack of detailed knowledge of transporters’ expression and role in the brain we will explore the expression and function of selected transporters by proteomic methods with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Additionally, we will create computational protein and ligand models from the target transporter by which we can understand the structure-activity relationships of transporter-utilizing compounds.

Joy of Work in our Labs

It has been nice to see that we have such a good spirit going on the labs at the moment. Ella, a new M.Sc. student have worked now with us for 3 weeks and another ERASMUS student Amal, from the University of Lyon (France) also is joining us next week, so welcome ladies! 😀 Our technician is having so many different cell cultures growing on at the moment, that we started to call the cell lab as a zoo. 😂

For me, it has been a busy week, but one submitted manuscript done and 2 review paper under preparation. And my thoughts are already in the next grant application... Have a nice and relaxing weekend! 😀

Alpha waves

Why am I always the last person to hear to good news... Now when we are almost back to the normal routines, I have found a bit difficult to focus on my own work. Of course supervising and discussing with team members is a big part of my work, but I mean the writing and reading that I need to do constantly between each and every talk and chat. And the days that I am working at the university, there can be a lot of background noise from corridor conversations etc. I like to listen music, but it is impossible for me to listen for the radio (advertisements annoys me) or my favorite music (I start to sing or dance). So I need something else. This week I participated to a training called "How to manage yourself in your work, focusing on without interruptions" and I've got a best tip ever, thank to Samuel and Tarja, the co-participants, try alpha waves. I, of course, with a little bit sceptical attitude tried, and less than 1 min I was in other place. Even though the TV that was on on the next room, I didn't notice it anymore. And now I now what is the music what they play in spas and massages! 😀

I do understand that this does not work for everyone, and I already fear that what if I get adapted and it won't work for me anymore... But then, I will try something else, perhaps ocean waves or rainforest, as long as it is not microwaves! LOL! 😂 Anyway, the best way to avoid the disturbance is to continue with the hybrid model, which I have decided to do, 1-2 days per week working at home makes miracles! And still I will be available for my team members most of the week. All the other interruptive things I already have pretty well handle, like notifications etc. I can easily work hours without reading any emails... 😁

And just to comment, breathing exercises won't help me at all, it makes me even more anxious!
