Busy but happy week behind!

First of all, we received great news yesterday, when Janne was awarded by Orion Research Foundation by a postdoc funding (link), so congratulations, Janne! 💪

Secondly, we hosted our good friends from Gdansk the Rector of Medicinal University of Gdansk, Prof. Michal Markuszewski and Process Development and Technologies Advisor at Polpharma, Paweł Pietkiewicz. It was such a great visit and we had a lot of fun, especially since Shool of Pharmacy was also enjoying the upcoming season, by having a pre-christmas party yesterday. I'm a bit tired but happy! 😍

New paper - old stuff finally out!

We recently got acceptance also for Andy's first Ph.D. thesis paper, from a project that was started together with Prof. Tarja Malm during COVID-19. So Janne and Tiina were the first ones involved in the project but then, later on, Andy joined in the process. After quite many revisions, our work is finally now published under the title "Brain-targeted Jedi1 and Jedi2 derivatives as potent enhancers of Piezo1 ion channel activity (link)" in a prestigious European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry journal. In this study, we developed novel brain-targeted activators for the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1. Originally, they were supposed to be prodrugs, but they turned out to be active derivatives instead. Not a bad outcome, since then there is no worries about the bioconversion phase. 😎 And yes, they really are called Jedi derivatives (not originally by us, the parents were named by others after the first found analog, Yoda1). I have called them as Leias, since there have to be a gender balance, but those names never ended up in our paper. You can still found it in our lab notebooks! 😍 Big thanks for all the co-authors and congratulations for Andy, we are one step closer to the Ph.D. defense!

Teaching time

Now is probably the most hectic time of this semester regarding the basic teaching in courses. Many of the Ph.D. students are assisting in the lab courses, and I had my yearly duty with "Applied Organic Chemistry" lecture course. I changed its name from the past years to cut the tie, and made great changes and after 1/3 of the lectures, I can already see that there is so much else to improve. Well, next year then... hopefully I will get constructive feedback from the students on how to improve, since compared to the last year, I was able to increase the amount of homework exercises at least, which was suggested. Although the schedule is way too tight for the students to do the exercises after the lectures.

Busy but happy week behind!
