I promised to post some photos from the FIBTRA 2023 meeting that we held 1 month ago. So here is the best collection below. And one more time I would like to thank my dear team, who help me in organizing the event. Although I was a bit nervous (and I still am with the final budget 😂), I really enjoyed every minute!
Last Friday I had a pleasure to witness my Ph.D. student Johanna's public Ph.D. Thesis examination. The opponent was Adjunct Professor Outi Salo-Ahen from Åbo Academi. Johanna and Outi had a great discussion and Johanna clearly showed her scientific maturity. Even the green board was needed! Unfortunately, I had to participate to the event from the audience side, and not as a custos, which was the original plan, but at the end, I was very proud and delight to see one more successful graduation. 😀
European Federation of Medicinal chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC) organized its 19th International Symposium on Advances in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry (ASMC) together with Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Section of the Croatian Chemical Society in Zagreb, Croatia last week. I have attended that conference previously, but unfortunately not this year. However, Andy our Ph.D. student was there. It was his first big conference for him, and it was really big, almost 600 participants and ca. 300 posters! Andy was lucky to have his presentation in the first day, since I must admit that I would be exhausted with posters after first day! 😂 So thank you Andy for presenting us and our work in such a prestigious conference!
It has been a busy start for the semester, but at the same time also a very good start for the semester. This week we re-submitted 2 manuscript revision, and a third revision request was received... well, let's hope that the first 2 ones will satisfy the editors and the reviewers and we will work hard for the 3. one next. Also, many of our projects has taken big leaps forward! Perhaps, something about those later during this semester!
This year, there has been an unusual low number of ERASMUS students coming to our School of Pharmacy, so there hasn't been a queue behind my office, like last year! 😂 Which is nice, since we have so many things to take care of at the moment, although we do like to have the students around as helping hands and to teach us something new about life we didn't know. 😁 Anyway, we cannot complain, since we will have students anyway. Two from Thailand, Vej and Tonnaow are already here, and this week Sara from Italy joined us. And also our local students, Mikko and Ville have started their M.Sc. theses. None of these students are in the photos, as I have been too busy to take ones, but I'll promise to take them later, at the same time, when I report some progress of these projects, I hope! 😄
We had this week the 6th annual meeting of Finnish Brain Tumor Research Association (FIBTRA) in Kuopio (Scandic hotel). We heard 11 fascinating presentations from all over the world, from Estonia, USA, Germany, Sweden, and Finland and from different areas ranging from basic biochemical research scientists and pharmacists, to neurosurgery, and medical physics. Of course it is a huge group effort always to organize these events, but also it is so rewarding to see the fruitful discussions and potential new collaborations that are initiated, not to forget all the new things and ideas that we all were able to learn and take home with us. I would like to thank all the group members for helping me out with organizing the event, but also all the funding sources and sponsors who make the event possible!
